Good grief. I can’t believe I just typed that headline. In this recent article on espn.com, it turns out that Pete Rose and Alex Rodriguez have become friends by sending each other text messages.
OK, maybe I can believe this. Those two guys - for some reason I can’t put my finger on - seem born to be good buddies.
It’s a fascinating piece and I strongly recommend you read it. According to the article, after the 2007 season, when A-Rod had a chance to opt out of his contract, Pete Rose gave him 5 reasons why he should sign with the Red Sox. Here they are:
- You’ll win
- You can play shortstop until Mike Lowell leaves and you love shortstop
- You’ll hit behind Manny and in front of Big Papi
- You’ll hit 800 home runs with that short porch
- The Red Sox fans will love you because you told New York go screw itself
Have to admit that I actually Pete may be right with that list. Except for #1, because we all know that A-Rod is some strange disease that keeps teams from winning what matters most. Just the fact that he’s befriended a lying cheat like Pete Rose is another example of A-Rod being low class.
