What are we to make of Charlie Zink? That would be the 28 year old knuckleball pitcher who (at the time of this writing) has a 7-2 record with a 2.21 ERA at Pawtucket. Amazingly, we never talk about him. We project the sox pitching staff in numerous ways that involve up and comers like Bucholz, Masterson, and Michael Bowden. Even Devern Hansack gets a mention here once in a blue moon.
But not Charlie Zink. Quite honestly, I’d forgotten about him. Only to be reminded when of him while browsing the sports section of the New York Times.
Personally, I’m ready for Tim Wakefield to be the last Red Sox knuckleball pitcher of this generation. I love Wake and he’s done so, so much for the team. But have to admit that every time the ball comes out of his hand, I think there’s a 50-50 chance that it’s going to be hit for home run.
