What would you give up for CC Sabathia?

It’s that time of the year.  July.  Time talk trades. The deadline is at the end of the month and the big name that will get tons of media attention is CC Sabathia of the Cleveland Indians.

Let’s assume that trading for him means being able to sign him to a long-term contract.  No short term rentals wanted here. Under that scenario, what would be willing to part with.

Here’s my proposal

P Charlie Zink
P Devern Hansack
P Michael Bowden
OF Brandon Moss

I’m not interested in another knuckleballer, so Zink is expendable.  Hansack is a throw in.  A young arm that has a better future elsewhere.  If he hasn’t cracked the Red Sox 25 man roster by now, he probably never will.  The big prizes for Cleveland woujld be Bowden and Moss.  Both are tough to part with.  But adding Sabathia to the roster means some pitching is expendable.  Even now Bowden probably doesn’t project into the Sox starting rotation for a few years - see Crundy’s analysis on this. As for Moss, he’s a likeable player, but will never be more than a 4th outfielder in Boston or reserve first baseman.  Guys like that are easier to find that left handed started pitching thats all star quality and good for 200+ innings a year.

I’m a believer that this it is going to take quantity to get Sabathia from the Indians.  Remember, they will lose him for a couple of draft picks at the end of the year, so convincing them to part now means 4, possibly 5 young players.  Cleveland’s play is that 2 or 3 of those young players will pan out.  Hell, sox can throw in Daniel Bard (but not Lars Anderson)

Here’s an update of the sox starting rotation with CC.  Just so you can drool over it.

Beckett
CC
Dice-K
Lester
Bucholz/Masterson/Wake (pick one)

It would probably look like that for a couple of years.

only problem is…cc is a free agent at the end of the year and he’ll be looking for a long term high end deal…which the sox do not like to do..they are finally clearing out their one long high $ deal (manny) and i severely doubt they will plunk down 6 years and umm… say a minimum of 17mm per year for cc–esp with that gut…

i’d love to h ave him but they won’t do that…

this is my view of the sox plan - they are pitching rich..which means they will not overpay for a starter from the outside…they will develop their aces from within ove rthe next 5-10 years…

so, if lester doesn’t pan out..then try bucholtz..then master-ful…etc…they are confident that with dice and beckett under contract they can build the rest of the team out from within in that regard…so, they will pay $ for a hitter or two over the next few years…my bet would be they’ll make a run a texeira…or however you say/spell his name…he’ll cost quite a bit but he’s a slugger and he’s good enough to displace yuke..as much as that hurts me to say….also…if it ends up papi is on the way down now with injuries tex could slip into that role as well…

my guess is the sox will do nothing interesting at the deadline this year…instead, i’m hoping they slide masterson into relief when bucholtz comes back - he could be the guy who picks up where oki left off and it would allow us to keep his arm in the majors even though he is not allowed to pitch too many innings this year…so he gains experience and helps the ball club and doesn’t throw his arm off…

btw, ‘tek was quoted as saying that lester will be the best lefty in the game next season-that’s a damn good rec…
